ST. LOUIS — A newborn Sichuan takin named Cornelia was recently introduced at the St. Louis Zoo. She was born in January, making this the first birth of a takin since 2016.

Cornelia weighed 19.4 pounds at her neonatal exam, according to the Zoo’s Instagram post, and is expected to grow to weigh 500 pounds over the next two years.

The name Cornelia comes from the Latin term for horn, which is “perfect” for this antelope-goat type species where males and females both grow small horns, according to the Instagram post.

She and her mom, Dawn, are doing well and made their first trip into their outdoor habitat.

Takin live in remote bamboo forests in the mountains of Asia and are protected by the Chinese government as they are considered a national treasure, according to the Instagram post.

Zoo visitors can stop by the Red Rocks for a chance to see Cornelia as she learns to climb and explore.
