Hello. I mentioned previously that I want to share some of my favorite artists with you. Well, I think I’ll incorporate each one into a little reminiscent tale from what I can remember from the past years of my life. More fun for me. When I was in University in California many, many moons ago I discovered LSD. I only managed to last for the first year and was tripping and running around the desert naked for most of it, but that’s just a bit of background info. One day my freshman college buddy and I were aimlessly driving through Palm Springs listening to ‘Mama Said’ by Lenny Kravitz. I was tripping hard. Logic and judgment based upon reason had left me hours ago. The last song on that record is a mediocre, but very psychedelic version of the first track, ‘Fields of Joy’. While this song was playing I suddenly saw the answer to everything right in front of me. It was a relatively short, barely visible sentence. But it was the answer to everything. It was a nice answer that made me feel ecstatically happy. But it was only there for a few seconds and then I saw how the edges began to crumble and very quickly it was washed away like a sandcastle by the sea. I knew right away that I would never find that answer again, but the song at the time was perfect.

Lenny Kravitz, like so many artists, started to become consumed by the gigantic market after the huge success of his second record. Still, many great tracks, but the importance of him had faded away just like my answer to everything. His first album, ‘Let Love Rule’ (1989) will always be a milestone in music history. Out of nowhere appeared this young, dreadlocked, fucking pissed of black guy with an album filled with classics. ‘Blues for Sister Someone’, ‘Mr. Cab Driver’ and Sittin’ On Top Of The World’, etc, etc. I’m listening to the record and I’m in a zone of flowers, tears and combat. Truly extraordinary. Then in 1991 came ‘Mama Said’. Less revolution, but very groovy. ‘Always on the Run’ with Slash is one of the biggest funky rock tracks ever. ‘Fields of Joy’ (original version) is the perfect opener for a rock record. ‘What the Fuck are we Saying’ is also pretty cool, but most of the rest is Barry White type sexy time music. Two extremely powerful and original albums. Like I said, many good albums and songs followed, but not really worth mentioning here. Oh yeah, Lenny is amazing ‘live’.

It’s such crappy weather outside that it should be made illegal to leave your home. Haven’t paid last years’ taxes yet and they’re sending me lots and lots of letters. I really should go by there, but some evil inner voice is holding me back. I read a great little quote in a book yesterday: ‘Daddy fish says to his son, “The World is a tank filled with water”. That’s like us. I have a little ‘do-it-youself’ cardboard minaret in front of me which I will cut out now, glue together and then place on my roof. I hope Allah is with all of you. – TIM
