Yamba is a quaint beach-side town, located in New South Wales on the eastern coast of Australia. At the mouth of the Clarence River, it is about a 3.5-hour drive from Brisbane, or about 4 hours from our home on the Sunshine Coast. Interstate visitors can fly to Ballina-Byron Airport and then drive an easy 100 kilometres down to Yamba.
Our family was lucky enough to spend three nights in Yamba, and we found it to be relaxed, very family friendly, and simply stunning.
Our Accommodation
We stayed in Burleigh Yamaba which is located directly opposite from Main Beach. You could not imagine a more perfect location then this, waking to views of the Pacific Ocean from the balcony and falling asleep to the sound of waves at night. It is walking distance to each of Yamba’s five pristine beaches. We rented the house through a local Real Estate after coming across it on Instagram. The check in and check out process were very smooth, property spotlessly clean and owner able to give us some incredible recommendations on how we might spend our time in Yamba.
Burleigh Yamba strikes the perfect balance of stylish, comfortable and affordable. It also has room for the whole family, if not two families! The versatile layout includes 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, huge backyard, double garage and more. The house can be rented as a whole or split into either the top or bottom floor for smaller parties.
Our Itinerary
We had three nights in Yamba and seemed to pack a lot in on paper, but felt relaxed at the same time. Here’s a look at what we got up to:
Thursday
We arrived just as it was getting dark so took advantage of our beautiful accommodation and decided to eat in for the night. We enjoyed The Mexican Yamba, the calamari tacos were really good.
Friday
We were up early and enjoyed breakfast in Burleigh Yamba. It was so easy to keep the holiday costs down by eating our breakfasts in. We were able to take some supplies from home and also stock up at one of the many local supermarkets.
After breakfast we headed to Main Beach and stayed there until just after lunch. It is perfectly family friendly with a beautiful sandy beach, surf club, cafe and ocean pool. The beach is located directly beneath the Pacific Hotel with an easy walking path to get down to it. The Kiosk cafe serves up delicious and healthy food from acai bowls, to protein smoothies, smash avocado, or if you are feeling like a treat they have hot chips! Yamba’s Main Beach is so quaint, beautiful and feels very Australian.
After lunch on the beach we took Rosie back to Burleigh Yamba for her lunch nap. The big children played in the large back yard of Burleigh Yamba, then watched a movie.
In the afternoon we went for a big walk (with the children on scooters) up to the light house, which has been lighting the way for Yamba for over 100 years. There is a beautiful view from the grassland which surrounds it, and would have made the perfect spot for some local fish and chips. We continued to the bottom of town, near the bowls club where opposite the road is a skate park and children’s play ground. I highly recommend the playground for anyone with little people.
For dinner we drove five minutes to Yamba Shores Tavern where we enjoyed the food, and the children had fun in the fenced playground. The tavern sits right on the waters edge with a beautiful view.
Saturday –
After another home cooked breakfast at Burleigh Yamba, we took a ten minute drive to Angourie to have a look at the blue and green pools. Angourie’s Blue Pool was once a rock quarry, which after being disturbed by an underground freshwater spring was suddenly transformed into an aquatic haven. We had fun jumping off of the rocks into the cool waters. It is only a short two minute walk from the carpark to the pools, so we took nothing but a towel and some water. Next to the blue pools is a salt water pool which looks spectacular on high tide. We walked all the way around from Spooky Beach to Angourie Point.
After a stop for some refreshments at Cafe Angourie we headed back to Yamba to Turners Breakwall to try and spot a dolphin or two. Whilst we were there we went for a swim at Turner’s Beach and got the boogie boards out to ride some of the long waves. It is in the car park here that the weekly markets are held if you happen to be in Yamba on a Wednesday.
For dinner we got some takeaway from the highly recommended BRGR Stop for burgers, followed by a treat from Yamba Ice Creamery, both were delicious!
Sunday –
On our final morning I went for an early run to take in as much as I could, during our final hours in Yamba. I run along the edge of Pippi Bach and Convenient Beach, into town and up to the light house. I soaked in as much of tYamba beautiful as I could, before saying goodbye to a perfect stay at Burleigh Yamba.
