CASE STUDY #16 GUEST HOUSE
Oak View, CA
2,120 SF

For this project — located on the site of a replica of Rodney Walker’s iconic Case Study House #16 that was built by the renowned architect’s son — TGA designed a guest house and garage that pays homage to the nearby masterpiece while establishing a distinctive architectural presence of its own. Blackened steel mullions on the windows and glass garage doors reinterpret the characteristic fenestration of Rodney Walker’s design in a new context. The exterior materials palette — Cor-Ten steel panels and board-formed concrete — creates a durable, fire-resistant structure that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.

REFERENCING AN ARCHITECTURAL ICON

Shaped to respond to the sloping ground and the spatial requirements for car lifts, the new building recalls the silhouette of Case Study House #16 but uses materials and a simplified massing that suit its program.
