Trichy: Devotees thronged the Kasiviswanathar temple in the city to witness the rare annual event of sun rays falling straight on the 'Siva Lingam' from the early hours of Tuesday.
Devotees consider it an auspicious event. Amidst floral and ornamental decorations, Siva Lingam in the temple glittered around 6.10am as soon as sun rays fell on it, bringing jubilation in devotees.
The event lasted for about 30 minutes.
A large number of devotees, especially unmarried young devotees, visited the temple to witness the event. "There is a belief that for those marriage is being delayed will get married soon after witnessing this rare event," said Kasiviswanathar temple priest Saminathan.
Vijaya and her husband Ramamurthy reached the temple around 3am and witnessed the event. "Witnessing the event keeps us positive all through the year," 45-year-old Vijaya said.
Saminathan said that the temple was constructed nearly 1,000 years ago. The 'Siva Linga' was brought from Himalayas.
The event would be witnessed on 7{+t}{+h}, 8{+t}{+h} and 9{+t}{+h} of the Tamil month of Aavani every year. This is the only temple in the district to have such a rare annual event.
