2014-07-04_1228Next week SBS airs the documentary commissioned for online, Cronulla Riots: The Day That Shocked the Nation.

This is the untold story of how a Sydney beach became the scene of a riot that rocked Australia.

It’s good to see this is getting a broadcast, rather than remaining purely an online project. Quite frankly it should be dramatised into a telemovie too.

Presented from the perspective of those who were there, Cronulla Riots -The Day That Shocked the Nation investigates simmering tensions between groups of Australians that led to racially motivated violence at Sydney’s Cronulla beach one hot day in December 2005.

Produced by Northern Pictures in Association with SBS Online and Screen Australia, Cronulla Riots is the first long form documentary commissioned exclusively by SBS Online and funded through the National Documentary Program (NDP).

Originally available online alongside 224 pieces of original multimedia content, Cronulla Riots won the 2014 Walkley award for Multi-media Storytelling last night in Sydney, bolstering its ‘Best Video’ win at the 2014 AIMIA (Australian Interactive Media Industry Association) Awards earlier in the year.

SBS Chief Digital Officer said: ‘Cronulla Riots is a great example of how the power of technology can enhance traditional forms of storytelling to create innovative new content experiences for audiences. SBS is committed to being a pioneer of interactive content and in helping to develop an exciting new online content industry for the future.

“We’d like to thank our partners at Northern Pictures, Screen Australia, The University of Western Sydney as well as all of our fantastic contributors from western Sydney, Cronulla and elsewhere who generously gave their time to develop this insightful project about a dark chapter in contemporary Australian history.”

SBS 2 at 9.30pm, Thursday 11 December.

  1. It seems like a rehash of an episode of Once Upon A Time In Punchbowl (which had an episode that specifically documented the impact of the Cronulla Riots on the Lebanese community). In fact, all of the speakers in the promo that I’ve seen have also appeared in that programme.
