Zuckerberg, who maintains control over the social media and tech giant, is still trying to make the metaverse happen — and he sees AI playing an increasingly pivotal role in Meta’s future. Its cash cow remains ad revenue from Facebook and Instagram, which rebounded in 2023 after a period of tough sledding that precipitated major layoffs and other cost-cutting moves. At the same time, Zuckerberg continues to show a willingness to burn billions of dollars on VR and AR development, including with the “mainstream” Oculus 3 mixed-reality headset ($500 and up) that launched in October 2023. For Zuck, the metaverse’s potential to alter how we work, play and socialize continues to be a long game: The company told investors it expects operating losses at Reality Labs to increase “meaningfully” in 2024 as it pumps more money into R&D.
