Tasman Peninsula

The attraction of walking on the Tasman Peninsula

The Tasman Peninsula hangs precariously off the south-east coast of Tasmania. Whilst only 95km from Hobart, the two isthmus that must be crossed to reach the Peninsula make it feel more isolated and remote. Much of the Peninsula is included within the Tasman National Park which is home to abundant wildlife including wallabies, wombats, seals, penguins and dolphins.

Named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, the Tasman Peninsula features rugged walking terrain and a dramatic coastline. The peninsula coast is punctuated by blowholes, gulches and caves. There are many unique rock formations including the Tessellated Pavement, the Tasman Arch, the Devil’s Kitchen and the Remarkable Cave. Exhilarating clifftop views are to be found at the three spectacular capes: Cape Raoul, Cape Pillar and Cape Hauy. In fact, Cape Pillar is comprised of the highest sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere, rising 300 metres above the Tasman Sea.

This area is best known for the World Heritage listed Port Arthur historic convict site. The brutal history of the Port Arthur convict settlement stands in stark contrast to the site’s extraordinary natural beauty.

Aside from walking, the Tasman Peninsula also offers many outdoor activities including rock climbing, abseiling, hang-gliding, canoeing and sea kayaking. Surfers are also well catered for, particularly at Cape Raoul, Roaring Beach and Shipstern Bluff.

There are several small towns on the peninsula, the largest being Nubeena and Koonya. Outside the National Park, there are accommodation options to suit all budgets including camping grounds, hostels, motels and self-contained accommodation. Inside the park, there is the popular Fortescue Bay camping ground and the pre-booked huts associated with The Three Capes Track.
