Succulents growing in terracotta pots.
Tammy delves into the wondrous world of Haworthia and shares her tips for keeping these little succulents happy.

SERIES 35 | Episode 03

Tammy introduces a group of easy-to-grow succulents commonly known as Haworthias, which are very much worthy of any plant lover’s attention.

Haworthias don’t grow very big but there is a wide variety of colours, forms and patterns, including clear section on leaves called fenestrations.

The group comprises three genera. True Haworthias form a stemless rosette of fleshy leaves and distinctive white, tubular flowers on long spikes; Haworthiopsis form long rosettes along their stems and Tulisa look similar but are different genetically.

COMMON NAME/S

Haworthia

BOTANICAL NAME

Haworthia sp., Haworthiopsis sp., Tulisa sp.

ORIGIN

Southern Africa

HABIT

Small compact succulents.

FEATURES

Interesting foliage colour, form and patterns.

USES

They can be grown in pots in bright light indoors, or outside in the garden.

BEST CLIMATE/POSITION

Hot, dry environments. Need good light but will take part shade.

PREFERRED SOIL

Free-draining cactus mix but adequate moisture in growing season.

PROPAGATION

Leaf cuttings or pups.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

Hate poor drainage. Will shrivel up and contract energy underground if allowed to dry out, but can be revived by watering.

Leaf stomata only open at night, which reduces water loss. This makes them drought tolerant but slow growing.
