About one in 45 Australians lives with an acquired brain injury, which is damage to the brain that occurs after birth. Suffering a brain injury is a life-altering event, that can affect a person's cognitive, physical, emotional and independent functioning.
But a small clinical trial in the United States provides a glimmer of hope, suggesting deep brain stimulation can restore some cognitive function in people with chronic disability that has been caused by brain injury.
