New beginning for Devil's Marbles
A park ranger with Muru Warinyi Ankkul in Tennant Creek says the joint management agreement for the Devil's Marbles Conservation Reserve is a good model for the rest of the Territory's parks.
The joint management plan, expected to go through the Territory Parliament soon, is part of yesterday's historic hand over of the reserve to Traditional Owners.
Brian Jakara says it's important for Parks and Wildlife to work with local Indigenous people to protect the area.
"We do lots of things like looking after sacred sites and burning and weed management.
"Also, we do contract work up near the Barkly region with the pastoralists stations up there and we might start doing things down here, looking after the land on our land here.
"It's very important, mainly for the younger generation so if they want to get this job that's why they look after the land and work together, keeping our culture strong as well."
