Steinitz, Wilhelm, b. Prague (Czech Republic), May 18, 1836, d. New York (USA), Aug. 12, 1900, chess player. Appointed himself ´world champion´ after his victory over the German master A. Andersen 1866; obtained the official title 1886, when he won against the Russian J. H. Zuckertort, who was living in exile in America. 1894 was defeated by the German E. Lasker.
