When, in the promotion of her new book, Julia Gillard spoke at the Camden Civic Centre last week, it had the feel of a group therapy session. The former prime minister said that while she didn’t envisage an ongoing career as a “self-help guru", her memoirs could help other women in building “greater resilience" in life.

For many in the audience, this was exactly what they wanted to hear. The questions from the floor concentrated on feminist complaints about misogyny and discrimination.
