At the turn of the twentieth century, Charles Dana Gibson's pen-and-ink drawings of the "American Girl" — now remembered as the Gibson Girl — became the national ideal of femininity. This collection of his images of youthful, dynamic women offers an informative and amusing reflection of the era's social life. Sentimental, humorous, and often gently satirical, these images portray the Gibson Girl at the theater, in the drawing room, flirting and courting, vacationing at the beach, and engaging in other genteel pursuits. Several of Gibson's "common man" illustrations provide a contrast, along with a section devoted to one of the artist's best-known and most beloved characters, the curmudgeonly Mr. Pipp.
This gallery features more than a hundred carefully selected images from vintage editions. A rich source of royalty-free art, it offers graphic artists, fashion designers, social historians, and nostalgia lovers a lovely and accurate chronicle of a bygone era.

I used to see Gibson Girl pictures in Post and Colliers magazines when I was a kid in the '40s. The ones I remember, the girls hair dos were similar to the long hair hanging in front of the shoulder like women wear today. Most were similar to question marks when in profile. Young and pretty they were, too, like most blond haired girls I see on TV. That is what reminded me of the Gibson Girls. This book is marvelous in my opinion. Sure brought back a lot of memories. I'm glad that many women I see on TV are just as beautiful.

Think of the 1890's and you probably can't avoid thinking of the "Gibson Girl." This is a collection of "the best drawings" by the man who created her, reproduced with diamond clarity and in a large yet handy size. There are single-panel jokes; satirical commentaries on the society of the day; cutting exposes of New York street life; and all 40 pages of "The Education of Mr. Pipp," in which a New England iron manufacturer goes abroad and has unexpected experiences. Gibson's pen-and-ink sketches are obviously made from personal observation, and though his "Girl" was emblematic of her day, each of the young (and not-so-young) women he portrays in these pictures is a distinct individual. For those interested in turn-of-the-century art (and life), this is a must-have.

The folks that sent me this book and charged me what they did, should have a bit of trouble sleeping at night. The book was marked for destruction and they even had it tagged for $1.00. I will never buy a book from Amazon again. To bad because I am the supervisor of a book club here and we bought hundreds of books on-line from Amazon. Live and learn I guess. THIS IS MY REVIEW Let's see you post this on the WWW. You have no guarantees of what you're getting on AMAZON. Sellers can lie and you can't do anything about it.

part of my job is to draw a monthly pen-and-ink illustration set in a hospital ICU, and obviously they aren't meant to be funny or cartoonish. I bought the Gibson book to act as a source for women's faces and hairstyles. In the event, it works for me more as a style manual than as a source of material. The women all look a bit supercilious and detached, and the hairstyles-well, I get more out of Gibson's pen-or-brush handling than I do out of the styling. No two are alike, but they all work for the subject matter and the composition. He knew his subject matter very well.

Sadly my amazon driver decided to bend the book into my mail box. So I received a bent book, but the images are still beautiful. I love this man work and his line work. I’m happy to finally have this in my collection!

An excellent book. As this is a reprint of an old book, I was very surprised at the quality of the illustrations which are brilliant. Gibson's handling of his line work is some of the best you will see. Besides the Gibson Girls there are many other characters, both men and women. There are a few peculiarities worth pointing out. Hardly any of the pretty girls are smiling and there are even less laughing. many of them are looking rather 'snooty and superior'. I expect that was the fashion during that period. Never the less.they are very well drawn. Study the method of drawing the various features, i.e. lips, noses, mouths, hands, etc. and the different ways of treating clothes. See how the artist has drawn the shadows on the faces;
Masterly. You can learn a lot by spending an hour or so copying some of them. Have fun.

Excellent book. Very nice wide format with large clear images doing justice to Gibson's line work. The drawings and scenarios are fascinating to look at, a really good insight into the time period. There is plenty of study material and lots to learn from this book if that's your thing.
