From the author of one of the biggest-selling history books of recent years, the follow-up to The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England. The past is a foreign country -- this is your guide.

We think of Queen Elizabeth I as 'Gloriana': the most powerful English woman in history. We think of her reign (1558-1603) as a golden age of maritime heroes, like Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake, and of great writers, such as Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. But what was it actually like to live in Elizabethan England? If you could travel to the past and walk the streets of London in the 1590s, where would you stay? What would you eat? What would you wear? Would you really have a sense of it being a glorious age? And if so, how would that glory sit alongside the vagrants, diseases, violence, sexism and famine of the time?

In this book Ian Mortimer answers the key questions that a prospective traveller to late sixteenth-century England would ask. Applying the groundbreaking approach he pioneered in his bestselling
Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England, the Elizabethan world unfolds around the reader.

He shows a society making great discoveries and winning military victories and yet at the same time being troubled by its new-found awareness. It is a country in which life expectancy at birth is in the early thirties, people still starve to death and Catholics are persecuted for their faith. Yet it produces some of the finest writing in the English language and some of the most magnificent architecture, and sees Elizabeth's subjects settle in America and circumnavigate the globe. Welcome to a country that is, in all its contradictions, the very crucible of the modern world.

This is one of my favorite books. If you wonder what life was like in 16th England and, presumably, Europe as well, you will find it here. The author knows his readers and answers the questions you may have and some you didnt think to ask. He shares intricate and intimate details of the typical life of the aristocrat, the (scare, but rising) middle class, and the hardships of those who must struggle to survive (and sometimes don't). Details, details, and more wonderful details - I have wondered about them while reading other books but I found the answers here. You can walk through the bustling, dynamic, crowded streets of Shakespeare's London, one of the most populous cities in Europe even 400 years ago, where wealth and poverty live side by side (like in the 21st century) and maybe take in a play at The Globe, where you can actually see Shakespeare perform in his own plays, maybe Hamlet or MacBeth. Visit the little towns of Stratford and Depford, typical of small towns throughout England. While there, you can stop by and pay respects to the two illustrious persons still buried there in their respective resting-places.
There are strict hierarchies re social-economic-educational-behavioral, and legal restrictions you must follow lest you be put in the Tower Of London for your transgressions, and to only be released at the Queen's pleasure. (Unless you have $ or connections in high places).
Not only is this book well-researched, referenced, and written, it glows with rare insight, compassion, and an extra-heavy dose of humor, making it worth one, perhaps several, readings. Far better to buy your own copy than repeatedly checking it out in your local library, if they have it. As one of my favorite books, I certainly can recommend it quite highly.

This is a good book, but it is not quite as engaging as TTTGT Medieval England was. I think it has less of a narrative style, and instead feels more informative. I'm still enjoying the book, and feel I am learning a lot about this time period, which I have never really studied in depth before. I have another book on some big personalities in science during this time period, and was kind of lost trying to place some of the events in history, and this book has helped bring that book to life! Still definitely worth a read, and I will still be buying the rest of the series eventually.

Scholarly and enjoyable break down of English society. The exact kind of information time travelers would want.

Terrific and comprehensive book describing every aspect of life in Elizabethan England. Ian Mortimer leaves no stone unturned, discussing every aspect of life, from one's diet, to transportation, clothing, jobs- you name it. Jam packed with interesting information, the reader takes away the sights and smells of living in the 16th century. Each chapter is filled with little gems, nuggets to keep the reader interested and compelled to learn more. I came out of this book learning that the Elizabethan age was a turning point, where new discoveries, and knowledge gave the world a nudge to grow into the modern age. Mortimer states "It is often said of Shakespeare that he is "not of an age but for all time"- a line originally penned by Ben Johnston. But Shakespeare is of an age-Elizabethan England. It makes him. It gives him a stage, a language, and an audience. If Shakespeare is "for all time," then so too is Elizabethan England."

I was a British studies major in college in the 80s. I wish I had a book like this at that time.

If you want to not just discover what other time periods were like, but to live them, Ian Mortimer is the guide you want to have. He has once again, in excellent prose, described another era in ways which are easily understandable, enjoyable and interesting. How did these people live? What did they do? What did they think? What did they eat and wear? How did they entertain themselves? How did they take care of themselves? What did they suffer from? He lays it out in a thorough and organized (yet not methodical) fashion transporting you to another age. I can't wait to see where he will take us next.,

A truly satisfying ride back in time with such fetal that you can almost sense your in the middle of each scene. Really did not want this book to end.
Much thanks to the author for the experience.

Some parts were really interesting esp the food, entertainment and hygiene. I just found some parts really dragging and difficult to follow, esp the part abt clothing. The flow was better though than the medieval edition which took too long with the law chapter. The voice was in general good and light to follow.

Recommended for anyone interested in history and culture. Best read in tandem with the medieval book.

I love to find presents that are perfect for the person receiving the gift. I have a very close friend who is a MAJOR history buff and can tell you anything about English/Scottish/Irish history. Got this for her b-day in April... Of course it’s not a competition when giving gifts, but if it was, I’d be the big winner.
Just a cool new way to look at history, even I (who usually tends to glaze over after a few hours) found this book to be just perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interessante Einblicke in das elizabethanische Zeitalter
Reviewed in Germany on October 24, 2015

4.0 out of 5 stars très bon
Reviewed in France on July 26, 2014

Its rare that I bother reviewing anything but I absolutely loved this book, I thoroughly enjoyed the first guide in audiobook format so this one was eagerly awaited and well worth it.

The narrator is wonderful and keeps the interest of the listener but it wasn't difficult, the style of writing is totally engaging and its very easy to loose yourself in the world being described. I would normally read or listen to a book and would struggle to remember half of what I have learned within a few hours, but the style used here makes every image stick with you.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone with even a passing interest in history.
