Product description

The KitchenAid Pro Line Coffee Mill is made of handsome Die-Cast metal housing making for a rugged, stable, and easy to clean unit. With the Pro Line Coffee Mill, you can adjust the Commercial Quality Stainless Steel Cutting Burrs to 15 different Grind Sizes for that perfect Espresso, French Press, or cup of automatic drip. The 7 oz capacity bean hopper and coffee bin are glass to minimize the static "cling" of coffee grounds. The DC motor with gear reduction system makes for quiet grinding. System turns the cutting burrs at just 450 rpm, minimizing the frictional heating of the grinds and preserving coffee flavor and aroma. The Under-Cabinet design allows the unit to fit easily under wall cabinets on the countertop. The smooth metal housing is a snap to wipe clean. Bean hopper, hopper lid, and coffee bin are dishwasher-safe.

1.0 out of 5 stars The product is outside guarantee

The equipment seems to me wonderful, but the one that sold to me does not work well. I communicate with Kitchen AID and they indicated to me that that model and the serial of the equipment no longer had the effective guarantee. By the effectiveness of Kitchen AID they are going to change the equipment to me. I do not understand as Amazon sells an equipment to me without guarantee

3.0 out of 5 stars A work in progress

This is a beautiful, solidly built machine, but getting it to work perfectly out of the box is a challenge. There is good support on the KitchenAid online forums, but the manual doesn't cover all the challenges. This particular model, the red KPCG1100ER suffers from a loose bean hopper lid, beans get stuck in the throat which stops grinding unless you poke your finger way down inside (yes, it's safe just inconvenient) and I've had trouble getting the grind for my espresso to be evenly fine each time. KitchenAid has a two-year warranty, and they wanted to replace the unit, but I like the Red and they eventually agreed to send me some parts to solve the loose lid, I'm going to try to live with the beans getting stuck, and they have given me instructions on how to clean the unit to get it to grind consistently. Definitely not a product for the set it and forget it crowd, but then neither are any of the other grinders I've seen on here!

Other more minor gripes are that grounds fall onto the base when you remove the grounds container, and that the grounds container is thin glass. Ideally, since KitchenAid has eschewed traditional grinder design, the grounds container should be a glass tub with a tupperware-like lid so I can just take it and put it in the fridge when I'm done grinding. Instead I transfer the grounds to a used peanut-butter jar which can be a messy process.

KitchenAid stands behind it, which is what saves it from a low rating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great grinder, one niggle

I researched extensively coffee grinders before I purchased this one. This was a replacement for my old grinder, a copy of the Braun KMM30 which I had to donate to work for industrial purposes (grinds clay very well). The Kitchen Aid is really over kill for me as I drink almost exclusively French pressed coffee. I even considered a hand crank mill. But what I wanted was consistent sized grounds and this mill was purported to do that.

Visually the grind looks no different than my old mill, but there is more resistance when I plunge which tells me there are more grounds or more surface area. The grind is not finer than before so I have to assume it is more consistently sized. I find the taste of my coffee to be smoother also.

Being a metallurgist I love the heavy metal construction of this grinder. Beautiful finish, feels sturdy. If only it was cast iron instead of aluminum (my area of expertise).

I consider the simple on/off switch a positive. I never found those serving size dials to be accurate. This works much better for my purposes.

The finished grounds jar I have found takes getting used to but it is nice how you can just slide it in and out of place.

My niggle is with the glass bean hopper. My glass threads do not screw into the unit easily. It is in there correctly but I worried I was going to break it. And my press fit cover is no where near press fit. It doesn't seal at all but just loosely sits in place. I was hoping for something more air tight. I go through beans fast enough and don't use the hopper as a storage container, but still, I think it should have sealed better.

I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could, that seal being my only complaint. I would definitely recommend this piece to anyone who is a serious coffee drinker or amateur connoisseur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well engineered and a good price

This is a well made coffee grinder that does as well as the ones at the supermarket that cost much more money. Yes the beans will stick and not feed evenly from the upper hopper but the one at supermarket does that too! That is just the nature of coffee beans. I use a chopstick I keep on hand to break up the beans before I turn on the grinder. The upper lid doesn't fit tightly but I don't find this a problem as it is making an adequate seal and doesn't rattle during operation. It is much quieter than my old blade unit and grinds much more evenly. Disassembly for cleaning is very easy. The glass hoppers cause minimal static and sticking of beans and grinds. I think the engineers at Kitchen Aid that designed this coffee grinder made one that seems to me works as well as the big ones at the supermarket. If they threw in a good motor I would imagine this unit will last many years. Judging from the sealed roller bearing they used in the grind adjustment assembly instead of a cheap bushing I would guess the motor matches the excellent quality of the rest of the machine. This unit was a great value for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Upper bin slight manufacturer defects
Reviewed in the United States on 5 December 2006

I just got mine tonight. It looks great and feels very solid. The noise output is about what I would expect. It grinds much faster than I expected. I am not knowledgeable enough to comment much on the grind quality or fineness, but I have found #8 to be too fine for my relatively cheap pump espresso maker, so it grinds plenty fine for me.

I am primarily writing this review because the unit I recieved has two defects on the upper glass bin. One, the lid does not fit tightly and is in fact quite loose. The owners manual states that it should be snug and one would expect it to be so. Secondly, the KitchenAid logo does not face forward. When tightened down the lettering faces off to my right about forty-five degrees.

Not incredibly major concerns but I will likely contact KitchenAid or Amazon about this as I now feel I have a unit with defective parts, even though it was not represented as such. I did buy this at a very large discount so I am still plenty happy with the design and quality of the grinder.

*Edited after grinding several espressos worth of beans and finding more information on the KitchenAid forums about this being a discontinued grinder (updated model features already noted in review after mine.) I wish I could revise to stars to 4/5 with two deducted for the unexpected upper bin issues and one star added back for the great price.
