Meet Nick Potts

Written by Eva Barnsley.

Meet Nick Potts, an Australian counterculture-cowboy inspired illustrator chats with us about music of the 1960s and 1970s, social media and its role in his artistic world, and where the inspiration of his kaleidoscopic artwork comes from.

Who are you?
I am Nick Potts. I am a freelance illustrator/artist. I work with a lot of bands, brands and anyone who is need of a piece. I enjoy surfing in my free time as well as feeding my brain with science and spirituality podcasts.

Where is home?
Sydney, Australia.

What's your favourite song at the moment?
8 Miles High - The Byrds

What's your favourite movie?
I'm not too sure, maybe Forrest Gump?

Three important things in your life...
Happiness, love and art.

How did your journey to being a freelance artist begin?
I started doing it to earn a bit of extra money to save for things/ make it through life, but then I realised I liked it more than working full time for someone and have been lucky enough to make most of my living out of it.

Has social media helped you in your career?
Its helped me exponentially. It's allowed me to share my work with people from all over the globe and meet many cool people, bands, brands etc and is probably where I can get the majority of my work. I think there are a lot of pros, it allows me to keep up to date with a lot of different types of artists at the flick of a finger. I guess maybe getting sucked into using it mindlessly is a big con- it's something I try to work on.

What was the process of developing a distinct artistic style?
I think my work style is a mash up of all the old 60's/70's art along with other bits and pieces. Work from that era is definitely a big influence, but I also enjoying getting inspiration from contemporary fine artists as well. But really anything from photography to comics influences me.

Where does the psychedelic counterculture influence in your art come from?
I guess from that love of that era and the music. It had it all, the visuals, the attitude and the sound.

What are your favorite pieces that you have made?
I don't know if I can pin point any ones in particular. However I am really loving the direction some new canvas pieces are taking, they're a bit different to my usual stuff and it's got me pretty amped. Hopefully I will exhibit them someday
