Often called the Picasso of graphic design, Brooklyn-born artist Paul Rand (1914–1996) brought a fresh sensibility to the world of advertising in the mid-20th century. Now, “Everything Is Design: The Work of Paul Rand,” an exhibition that opens today at the Museum of the City of New York, will showcase 150 of his bold creations. From the modernist magazine covers that launched his career to his wry advertisements to his rebranding campaign for IBM, the works are a testament to the artful hand that influenced much of the commercial imagery we see today.
