The balcony tends to become wet and inaccessible during the monsoon. As the rains begin, our first instinct is to scurry indoors and take in the lush views from the warmth and comfort of our homes. However, with a few quick fixes you can turn your balcony into an outdoor space that is functional all year around. Follow these balcony design ideas and DIY home decor tips to create the perfect outdoor spot where you can enjoy the cooler weather with a piping hot cup of tea during the monsoon.

1. Hang Blinds

Install blinds to prevent rain from to enter the balcony from the sides. PVC blinds are ideal since they are waterproof. Transparent PVC blinds will block heavy rain but allows penetration of natural light. Bamboo blinds are a lightweight option if you live in an area that gets light to moderate rainfall. Alternatively, uPVC or aluminium sliding windows can be closed while it's raining and be left open for rest of the day.

2. Add a Roof

If you have an open-to-sky balcony, install a temporary structure to protect it from the rain. Invest in a motorised retractable awning. Make sure that the awning is slightly bigger than the balcony. A lightweight PVC roof structure is affordable and allows sunlight to filter through. Patio umbrellas are perfect for a small balcony.

A toughened glass roof is permanent solution and can be used for modern homes. It offers maximum protection from rain and allows maximum penetration of light. The only drawback is that it is expensive and is difficult to clean or maintain due to limited accessibility. For a rustic look, cover an open-to-sky balcony with a metal framework and Mangalore tiles.

Wooden furniture should be sealed periodically to protect it from external weather elements. Wrought iron furniture is sturdy and gives the balcony and ornamental look. Cast aluminium and steel furniture are lightweight and perfect for a modern balcony. Wicker and rattan furniture are affordable, durable, light-weight, easy to maintain and can be upholstered in moisture-proof and mildew-resistant acrylic fabrics.

4. Accessorise

Beautify the balcony with an outdoor rug in moisture-resistant materials like nylon, polyester or polypropylene. A combination of plain and printed polyurethane foam cushions in vibrant colours are appropriate for the monsoon and will make your balcony feel warm and cozy.
