Caitlin Henderson, Dainty Swallowtail Caterpillar (Papilio anactus) (April theme: Detail)

This Dainty Swallowtail caterpillar has a hidden secret. The forked orange structure is called an osmeterium, and it is normally tucked away inside the body. When threatened, the caterpillar throws back its head and appears to grow a snake-like tongue, excreting a bad smell like rotten fruit.
