Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his wife Therese Rein made a surprise three-hour pre-election visit to Australian troops serving in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan province, in southern Afghanistan.
This is the first time a wife of a serving Australian prime minister has travelled to a war zone to visit the servicemen and women on active duty.
