Broker’s Comments

SHABBY TIGER is a handsome Berret Racopeau design by Wauquiez. She was delivered to her first owner in 2013. She boasts a spacious aft cockpit and excellent accommodations, including three guest cabins and a wonderful deck saloon arrangement, which makes her comfortable and suitable for living aboard and sailing in warm waters. She would also be a great choice for sailing in northern waters. She was originally specified for bluewater cruising by her first owner, with significant upgrades, including –

  • Full electric furling rig with sails in Hydranet by Incidences of Brest.
  • Air conditioning throughout.
  • Cummins Onan 7kvA diesel generator.
  • Full sun protection.

Unfortunately, he did not enjoy sailing and quickly returned to motor yachting. As a result, her current owners purchased her in virtually new condition in 2016.

After the purchase, they significantly upgraded her. As experienced sailors, they knew what would work to ensure that the yacht was not only a comfortable platform for living but also a capable sailing yacht. The list of upgrades was extensive, including –

  • Custom outboard crane.
  • Design-led, coordinated interior and outdoor soft furnishings.

In addition to the items listed in the specification, detailed improvements include fitting interior shelves to cabin and galley lockers, adding shelving in the lazarette, and soundproofing the aft cabin sole to minimize propeller noise.

Throughout their ownership, SHABBY TIGER has been meticulously maintained and is in great shape today. She is sold with a full set of original equipment manuals, builders’ drawings, and electrical layouts.

SHABBY TIGER has lovely, dry, and clean bilges thanks to her keel sump. She receives annual antifouling treatment with a single coat of International Micron antifouling to prevent paint build-up. Additionally, she undergoes mid-season scrubbing. The hull and superstructure are polished at least annually, and the mast is cleaned and waxed every year with Aerowax. The standing rigging is inspected at that time. The varnished cockpit table and front sails are stored below when she is not in use. These sails, radial cut in Hydranet, are in good condition with no significant wear.

SHABBY TIGER is a great platform for family sailing with the potential to cruise far aboard.

Owner’s Comments

Originally a French family firm, Wauquiez has been building pedigree bluewater, offshore yachts for nearly 60 years and introduced the first innovative Pilot Saloon in 1991. We were looking for a good sailing performance with superior quality build and excellently equipped technically. The Wauquiez Pilot Saloon 47 fitted the bill for all our adventuring and comfort requirements.

SHABBY TIGER was registered in 2013 but her first owners soon discovered that they preferred powerboats to sail, and she had been stored ashore unused for 18 months when we bought her in May 2016.

Whilst the boat itself and her equipment were all in super condition, we invested in a complete makeover of the rather sombre interior décor. The soft furnishings were professionally re-designed, linking the look & feel of each zone to the next. Using outdoor, washable fabrics, principally from the Jim Thompson No. 9 Collection, a coherent and vibrant style was created – the saloon and 3 cabins (fabric-covered headboards in both double cabins; mattress covers in the bunk cabin; scatter cushions in all cabins, most with an Ikat theme). Updated LED accent lighting in the saloon enhances the evening mood. The exterior design accent colours are taupe and turquoise, with a full suite of complementary pattern cockpit and foredeck cushions. The overall result was transformational!

We also upgraded the heads fittings with Hansgrohe and Smedbo accessories, and fitted Caframo Scirocco fans in each of the cabins to enjoy a cool breeze at night.

For sailing, all sail control rigging was replaced in 2019 and, for secure nights, the anchor replaced with a large 33kg Rocna.

We spent the first 3 seasons in the Balearics, with a delightful mooring in Mahon Menorca, sallying forth to Mallorca, Cabrera and Ibiza as the whim and wind took us. Old Palma town, the natural beauty of Cabrera and the traditional annual horse festival in Mahon were a revelation. We were sorry to leave but felt we should continue our journey eastwards.

Since 2019, we have been in Corfu, a pretty and interesting island, and the Ionian Sea. The scenery is spectacular, mountains descending right down into the classic blue sea, beautiful bays to anchor in (usually with a welcoming taverna!), and calm seas at night for a peaceful sleep.

She is a wonderful boat for all weathers and for cruising sailors of all ambitions. She carries a powerful rig with Hydranet sails that gives a great sail in a modest breeze, and she happily shoulders the waves when under stay sail and reefed main.

Electric winches make setting and furling sails a matter of moments. She is easy to sail single-handed. Bow thruster and a feathering prop that is as effective in reverse as it is ahead, eases close quarters handling. The powerful engine delivers a comfortable cruising hull speed at around only 1500 rpm.

A great cockpit for dining and foredeck space for warm summers, with comfortable, snug protection in the saloon for evening dining or cooler temperatures – but still with all round views of the sea and sky beyond.

The electric halyard winch makes light work of hoisting the dinghy on to the foredeck, and a custom-designed crane lifts the 6hp Yamaha outboard from dinghy to the bracket on the taffrail, or directly into the lazarette.

It is of course with sadness, but all good things must end, and we have concluded that it is the right time for us to retire from sailing, handing on our boat to another caring owner.
