White-throated Needletail
In over 60 years of birding"down under" this is only the second time that we have seen a White-throated Needletail on the ground. These birds spend 24/7 gliding up to an altitude of 2000metres when here on migration and are very, very rarely seen on the ground. This bird was found in our garden and we do not know how it got there. With sickle-shaped wings it has a lot of trouble getting airborne and we have taken it to a vet to see if it is carrying an injury.

A super picture to get Hans, but such a shame he was grounded. I hope you get positive news back from the vet.

Many thanks my friend.

Excellent capture of this species on the ground H&J, well done taking to the vet mate. Hope it does well.

Not only the fastest bird in level flight, but together with the Alpine Swift, the most spectacular flier of all. Hope he's OK.
