Maroon city: Sydney Harbour Bridge lights up for Queensland

By Sean Parnell

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has made good on his promise to light the Sydney Harbour Bridge in maroon if Queensland won the State of Origin – but only for 35 minutes.

After the Queensland rugby league team won the third game, and the series, in Brisbane on Wednesday night, Perrottet declared it a tough time for NSW.

He also acknowledged the consequences of the outcome, specifically a bet he had with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk over the series decider.

“And just like paying a hotel quarantine bill … an agreement is an agreement,” Perrottet tweeted, in passing reference to a previous state-versus-state dispute over quarantine funding.

“The Harbour Bridge will sadly shine maroon on Friday ...”

Palaszczuk, who had promised to have Brisbane’s Story Bridge lit up blue if NSW won, wasted no time in calling in the bet.

“QLDER!!!!!!! Time to light the Sydney Harbour Bridge MAROON,” Palaszczuk tweeted on Wednesday night.

On Friday night, Perrottet tweeted a photo showing more bridge and harbour than colour lights: “Hey Queensland, this is how you make maroon look good.”

While the lights on the bridge switched to blue soon after, various landmarks in Brisbane remained lit up in maroon on Friday night.
