Lisa Wilkinson Quits Today And Announces Move To Ten In Shock Announcement

    Today was her last day.

Lisa Wilkinson has quit the Today Show and will take up a new role with Channel Ten's The Project, announcing her resignation from Nine in a statement on Twitter on Monday night.

Wilkinson, who was recently announced as the host for the 2017 Walkley Awards, said today was her last day at the helm of Nine's breakfast show.

The statement said Channel Nine has been unable to meet Wilkinson's expectations for her next contract.

"We express our gratitude for Lisa for her 10 years with the Today Show are disappointed we find ourselves in this position," it read. "Nine will be going in another direction and will be considering our options in coming weeks and months."

Shortly thereafter, Network Ten announced Wilkinson would join in a senior hosting and editorial role from January 2018.

Wilkinson will join evening current affairs and new show The Project, working alongside hosts Waleed Aly, Carrie Bickmore, and Peter Helliar, the statement said. She will also host the Sunday Project.

"Most particularly though I want to thank the Today Show audience who have been so supportive and incredibly loyal to me over the last decade," she wrote.

A veteran TV host and journalist, Wilkinson had been at the Today Show for ten years in May this year.

    UPDATE

Wilkinson's former colleagues thanked her and bid her farewell on the program on Tuesday morning.

"For ten years Lisa has dragged herself out of bed at 3.30 in the morning, fed the dogs and cats, put a load of washing on, and come to work and sat on my left to inform you about what's happening in the world," said Karl Stefanovic.

"She handled those brutal hours with grace, beauty, intelligence and a wicked, wicked sense of humour. For whatever reason, she won't be doing that anymore and it was a surprise to us all... it will take a little while to sink in."
