MG Motor has launched its tiny two-door, four-seat Comet EV “no-nonsense car” in India, though it won’t be making the trip Down Under.
The MG Comet EV is the second electric vehicle (EV) the Chinese carmaker has launched in India, following the ZS EV.
An MG Australia spokesperson has confirmed the Comet EV won’t be launching in Australia or New Zealand.
This tiny MG EV is essentially a rebadged Wuling Air EV, which is a Chinese-market electric vehicle (EV) produced by the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture company. MG already rebadges a number of LDV and Baojun vehicles for the Indian market.
In India the Comet EV has an introductory price of ₹789,000, which directly converts to $14,561.
The Comet EV is powered by a single electric motor producing 31kW of power and 110Nm of torque, hooked up to a 17.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
MG claims the Comet EV has a range of 230km according to an undisclosed efficiency standard. It has a Type 2 charging port and can only charge at rates of up to 3.3kW, which means charging from 0-100 per cent takes a claimed seven hours.
The Comet EV measures in at 2974mm long, 1505mm wide, and 1640mm tall with a 2010mm wheelbase. This makes it over 600mm shorter than the Kia Picanto, which is one of the smallest cars on sale in Australia.
On the safety front it has two airbags, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

- Leather-wrapped steering wheel
- Fabric upholstery
The Comet EV can be had in five different exterior paint colours including Apple Green and Starry Black two-tone, Candy White and Starry Black two-tone, Starry Black, Aurora Silver, and Candy White.
The carmaker is also offering a range of sticker and graphics that can be applied in over 250 combinations.
This isn’t the first time a car company has ruled out bringing its smallest EV to Australian shores, as BYD recently ruled out bringing its Seagull EV that was revealed at this year’s Shanghai motor show.
