From the Classifieds: 1989 VN Holden Commodore Berlina V8

Earlier Holden Commodores could be had in many unique combinations, but there aren’t too many of these still kicking around

It’s no secret that the values of late-model V8 Commodores and HSVs have skyrocketed since production ended more than five years ago now, but while everyone fights over the finest and final Holdens made in 2017, some older and rarer models are flying under the radar of many collectors.

One example of just such a vehicle is this pristine 1989 VN Holden Commodore Berlina automatic fitted with the optional 5.0-litre V8 and Formula styling pack.

Just as it did all the way up to the VE, the Berlina nameplate marked the entrance to the ‘luxury’ range of Commodores in that it was positioned above the base Executive but below the Calais, and more comfortable than the sportier Commodore S and SS.

Building on the Executive’s specification, the Berlina threw in a four-speed automatic and air-conditioning as standard, while cruise control, powered windows and 15-inch alloys were all optional extras.

Also included on the extras list was a 165kW/385Nm 5.0-litre V8 and Formula styling pack which combined to create a relaxed SS-lookalike more suitable to cruising up the highway than attacking back-roads or racetracks.

That’s exactly the combination you see here on this relatively low-miles example – fitted with the big engine, body kit, matching decals and cruise control – presented in immaculate condition and being sold privately in Preston, Victoria.

What makes this example particularly appealing is the fact the paint and decals are all original and, by the looks of the photos at least, spotless.

Clearly loved and cared for since the day it was delivered, the seller describes their kitted-out Berlina as a “true survivor” and says it “turns heads everywhere it goes”.

The V8 burble you can hear in the accompanying video will undoubtedly attract the attention of passersby, who may also notice the unique body kit and contrasting red decals adorning the pristine paint.

Old Commodores are renowned for their droopy interior trim – especially the headlining – yet there’s hardly a mark to be seen anywhere within the grey cloth and vinyl interior.

An original dash mat has protected the 1980s plastic and the carpets have clearly been cherished because they still look fluffy and soft beneath their protective mats, and completely devoid of dirt or stains.

Yes, late-model V8s might get attention because they were among the best and last Holdens ever produced, but collectors shouldn’t forget about the older and less well-known models and their unique spec combinations – especially when examples like this concours-condition Berlina can be had for less than half or even a third of the price of a pristine VF SS.
