Ute Muster done, but not dusted

Four days of soaking rain failed to curb enthusiasm at 2011 Deniliquin Ute Muster

Driza-Bone gear got a good workout at the annual Deniliquin Ute Muster as rain failed to muddy the spirits of the more than 18,000 people who attended the 2011 event.

In fact the event set new records for the number of muddy and bogged utes – and the turnout of wet blue singlets.

Held on Friday September 30 and Saturday October 1, the 2011 Deniliquin Ute Muster attracted 6,998 utes and 1,728 blue singlets as participants and spectators rocked to the music of Suzi Quatro, Icehouse, Eskimo Joe, the Sunny Cowgirls, Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole at the concerts held on both nights.

The organisers also claim that the biggest crowd outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground sat down in front of a big screen at the Deniliquin event to watch Geelong and Collingwood battle out the 2011 grand final.

Festival general manager John Harvie said the weather didn’t prevent 2011 from being a success: “Considering the prevailing weather conditions in the lead up to, and during the event, it was another very successful event,” he said.

The Deniliquin Ute Muster Ute of the Year title went to Hayden and Jess Sharman from West Meadows in Victoria with their modified silver Toyota LandCruiser FJ45. The Australian National Circle Work Championships were won by Steve Pilkington from Saddleworth in South Australia, who used the boggy conditions to extract the most from his Holden VR ute Ahead of Adam Laneyrie from Condobolin in NSW and Paul Archer from Rushworth in Victoria.

Paul Archer also figured in the Holden Barrel race where he took out first place in his Natrad ute, while fellow Victorian David Slaughter from Seville out-performed the rest driving his Redbelly Black XH Falcon ute in the Go to Whoa competition.

The Holden Grunt Off challenge was taken out, in the girl’s division, by the Scrubettes and in the men’s division by Stoodley’s Friends. The wet conditions made pulling a Holden ute over 40 metres quite a challenge.

The first Deniliquin Ute Muster was held in 1999 and is considered to be the largest event of its type in the world. The original event attracted no less than 2,839 drivers, growing to 10,152 in 2010.
