Talk about an expensive makeover: Last week, it was just revealed that the iconic Sydney Opera House will undergo a $202 million renovation project, the largest since opening its doors in 1973. Here's what you should know about the overhaul:

There Will Be More To Do Than Snap a Picture

The main goal of the massive project is to “improve access and ensure it meets the needs and expectations of audiences, artists, and the 8.2 million people who visit each year," said Troy Grant, the New South Wales Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts. That means those famous arches will soon include a new Creative Learning Centre for children and families they can participate in workshops, creative-play activities, talks, and performances. There will also be a separate space for a permanent digital classroom where students will be able to work with artists in programs spanning drama, music, maths, science, literature, history, Indigenous Australia, and other study areas. An updated entry and foyers under the Monumental Steps will boast everything from new elevators to digital art canvases, and provide better access for those with disabilities. A new multi-function center, where conferences and weddings with views of the harbor can be held, will be another highlight of the renovations.

The Acoustics Are Getting a Major Upgrade

One of the biggest undertakings will be to improve the acoustics; something which actor John Malkovich publicly complained about after his 2011 opera flopped. (He called the famous concert hall’s acoustics “hideous” and described the stage as “continent-sized.”)

The updated Concert Hall will feature a 3D sound system and drapes, better acoustics, and a quieter air conditioning system. In addition, the renovation will lower the stage and install a ceiling with reflectors to try and improve distribution of the sound.

They're Staging An Opera...About Themselves

To celebrate the milestone change, the Sydney Opera House will also be highlighting the renovations in the best of ways: with a new opera about itself. Sydney Opera House, The Opera will take place outdoors on the steps for limited performances in October and November. The two hour and 45-minute play will detail the dramatic story of how one of the world's most famous sites was built, starting from its origins as a tram depot.

There Will Be Some Closures

With renovations beginning in mid-2019, the Concert Hall upgrade is expected to take approximately 18 months of renovations, and is slated for completion in time for the Opera House’s 2021 season. The Sutherland Theater, which hosts opera, ballet, contemporary dance, and music, will close from May to December 2017 so that its machinery is made safer. All other facilities will remain open during the renovation.
