1937 Tatra T77A Aerodynamic Limousine

  • Chassis Number: 35678
  • Engine Number: 201-700
Built for a short period between 1934 and 1935, the Tatra 77 sported a body designed by Paul Jaray, who worked with Tatra's chief designer Hans Ledwinka. Jaray had worked at one time with German airship manufacturer Luftschiffbau Zeppelin and produced an aerodynamic shape that gave his car superior performance, fuel economy, and reduced cabin noise. The Tatra T77's body boasted a drag coefficient of just 0.21 but this wasn't the only thing revolutionary about the T77. With the engine mounted in the rear, passengers had more legroom and sat lower to the ground, dropping the car's centre of gravity and improving its handling. In 1934 Tatra upgraded its flagship T77 to a 3.4-liter engine, which increased its top speed to 93 mph. Just 107 examples of the T77 were constructed before the automaker moved on to the T77A in 1935. Visually, the most notable difference between the T77 and the later T77A was the addition of a steering-turned central headlight.

This Tatra T77A was bought new by industrialist Josef Barton from the Tatra dealer Nachod in Czechoslovakia in 1937. It was acquired by its current owner in June 1983 from Jaromir Kurc in Czechoslovakia but was not exported to his home in the Netherlands until 1988 when export regulations were relaxed. The car's body was completely renovated, and the car was also fully restored mechanically. This work was carried out in the Czech Republic by the Tatra expert Rudolf Kandusz, in Ecorra between 1994 and 2007. This car has won many awards.
