  • Mr Albanese told Mr Dutton to 'sit down boofhead' during Question Time
  • Dutton has since been mocked online with many creating memes of the remark
  • The term 'boofhead' was even the number one trending hashtag on Twitter

Peter Dutton has been mercilessly mocked online after he was labelled a 'boofhead' by Anthony Albanese in Parliament.

The Labor leader went viral when he made the remark about the Defence Minister during a fiery Question Time on Tuesday.

Mr Albanese had approached the dispatch box to confront Prime Minister Scott Morrison

Speaker Adam Wallace gave Mr Albanese the call but he was barely able to get a few words out before Leader of the House Mr Dutton attempted to shut him down.

Mr Albanese immediately fired back: 'Well hang on. Sit down, sit down. You sit down boofhead. You sit down, I've got the call. I've got the call, sit down.'

The remark - and Mr Albanese's dated terminology - shocked and amused Australians around the country with '#boofhead' quickly trending at number one on Twitter.

Several created memes including one that shows a billboard of Mr Dutton with the slogan 'sit down boofhead'.

'Quote of the week to Peter Dutton by Anthony Albanese: 'Sit down boofhead'.  Dutton back to his seat with his tail between his legs!' one person tweeted.

'Sit down boofhead. Can I get it on a t-shirt?' asked another.

In the moments after Mr Albanese's now famous remark, 'ooos' were heard from the Coalition benches as the Speaker ordered Mr Dutton to take a seat.

The Labor leader said: 'On relevance, the only Coalition in this house is the rabble over there'.

Mr Dutton then stepped up and accused Mr Albanese of having a 'glass jaw', a term used to describe a boxer vulnerable to knockout blows.

'If there was a standing order on glass jaws he would be in order,' Mr Dutton quipped, prompting laughter from Barnaby Joyce in the background.

Mr Dutton sat down but continued to shout 'glass jaw' across Parliament whenever Mr Albanese was speaking.

Mr Wallace attempted to end the tit-for-tat by calling for the politicians to show each other more respect.

'I don't expect this place to be a monastic library, but the Australian public does not want to see this place descend into a political coliseum,' he said.

'There will be a lot of discussion over the next days and weeks over respecting this place.

'And I would ask members, all members to show that level of respect in this chamber,' he said in reference to a sexual harassment report released on Tuesday.
