  • The lights on the palms go up the base of the tree to the palm's bulbous top before being strewn out on the leaves in single spurts

Christmas is coming! At least that's what a holiday light display is supposed to announce. Mission accomplished?

These phallically decorated palm trees in a small town in Italy have burst onto social media, garnering lots of attention for the obvious.

The photo of Christmas lights on palm trees in Civitanova Marche has gone viral and the town's people are excited for their new found fame.

'Absolutely hilarious! Always good to celebrate the town council's sparkly erections at the annual Winter Festival – it's worth the council tax alone!' a town local said, according to IBTimes

The image was picked up by the Twitter account 'You Had One Job' and was posted with the caption 'Why you don't put Christmas lights on palm trees.'

The lights, which cover the entire palm tree base, with a wider, bulbous section at the top- are made that much more inappropriate as the lights are strewn out on the leaves in spurts.

Another presumably Italian person added to the Twitter thread: 'We are proud of our Italian trash.'

Many people were guessing if the inappropriately decorated palm trees were in the United States.

Many hazard guesses that the display was in Florida, while others thought Arizona perhaps.

The town officials are taking the good natured ribbing in stride however, and hope the display brings more people to the town to see their version of a white Christmas, and pump up the economy.

Another Twitter user suggested 'I don't think that's what's meant by a happy ending to the year.'
