'I always saw myself as this strange left-of-field character actor,' he continued.

And now, at the age of 53, David added that he is happily ready to embrace more supporting roles, while letting younger actors take centre stage instead.

'You get to a certain point in your life and you're not going to be the lead anymore, which I've got to say I don't mind.'

After leaving the show, he then landed a role as Audrey in Baz Luhrmann's hit film Moulin Rogue! in 2001.

He went world-famous after that with his debut in the Lord of the Rings franchise as Faramir in 2002, before starring in Van Helsing (2004) and 300 (2006).

The star also appeared alongside fellow Australian, Nicole Kidman, in Lion (2016).

And during his interview with Stellar, the star strongly hinted he'll be making an A-list cameo on the show he found fame on 21-years ago.

'You can expect one. You can certainly have expectations...' he told the publication.

The actor married dancer-turned-yoga-teacher Kate Agnew 23-years ago and the couple are still going strong.

They share two daughters Kate, 13 and Eliza Jane and Millie, eight.
