Discussing theme that runs through his recent work, he revealed: 'I keep masturbating. In the last three or four movies, I've got a masturbation scene.

'I did it in High Life. I did it in Damsel. And The Devil All the Time. I only realized when I did it the fourth time. But when I saw the clay figure of the mermaid [in The Lighthouse], if you're getting turned on by that, you're in a very strange place in your life.'

Robert has previously spoken about the awkwardness of filming masturbation scenes, famously doing the act on camera for 2009's Little Ashes instead of faking the movement.

His work in The Lighthouse will also no doubt stick with him, however, as he discussed the troubles he encountered filming a fantasy scene in which he has sex with a mermaid.

The scene was originally designed to be shot in the ocean, but the coldness made the shoot impossible, and they had to relocate to dry land.

'We were just sitting there convulsively shivering', Robert recalled. 'It's not very sexy at all.'

The eerie drama, directed by Robert Eggers, follows Ephraim (Pattinson) as he spends four weeks as an assistant to a lighthouse keeper (Willem Dafoe).

He must carry out the mundane tasks of cleaning, scrubbing floors and carrying coal.

However the remote island soon begins to take its toll on Ephraim and he soon transcends into a world of madness and chaos, murdering a seagull and screaming about wanting steak.

The film, which has been described by the director as 'something a little weirder' than his last film The Witch, made its debut earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Lighthouse will hit UK screens on October 5 and the US on 18th.

Robert is currently gearing up to star in the new Batman movie, and admitted he was 'f****ing furious' when his casting was leaked as he worried it would cost him the role.

However, he was pleasantly surprised by the public's reaction to the casting, as it was more pleasant than he thought it would be.

He mused: 'To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting. It's much more fun when you're an underdog. There's no expectation of you.'

Discussing how it felt to try on the iconic costume for the first time, he explained: 'You do feel very powerful immediately. And it's pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating.

'You've got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you've got it on, it's like, "Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs."'

Although the casting came as a shock to DC fans, Robert had been chasing the role of Batman for years.

'I'd had Batman in my mind for a while,' he admitted. 'It's such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I'd been prodding Matt [Reeves, the screenwriter]. He didn't accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him.'
