Dougie Poynter is already famous for being one quarter of McFly, and for his victory on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2011. But he's now adding a new string to his bow, as he's written a book about the dangers of plastic.

The musician has revealed that he owes a lot of his environmental knowledge to his very famous and respected neighbour – and it's someone who we'd all love to live next door to.

Appearing on James Martin's Saturday Morning on ITV, Dougie spoke about his new book Plastic Sucks, which provides a guide to help people get involved in the mission to cut out single-use plastic.

Dougie revealed that he's been interested in the environment ever since he was a child and said that, amazingly, the person who most inspired him is now one of his neighbours – and it's none other than national treasure and Seven Worlds, One Planet host Sir David Attenborough.

"I owe 90% of everything I know about the natural world to that man. If it wasn't for him I don't know if I would be that interested," Dougie said.

"I got to share a car with him a couple of times, we live on the same street. Every answer he had to any question I had deserved a round of applause. 'What else do you do with your spare time, David?' 'Oh, I just play a little bit of piano and eat a lot of chocolate'."

Dougie also explained that he is hoping his book will help children develop an interest in taking care of the planet, especially as he was passionate about the natural world himself from such a young age.

"I bred reptiles as a kid and that's how I paid for all my first guitars," he said. "That led into trying to do whatever I could to protect the natural world."

But it's not just for kids, as Dougie is hoping adults will also take an interest in Plastic Sucks!

"(My book) is aimed at kids but I did want adults to be able to pick it up and absolutely breeze through it and not be overwhelmed with scare tactics and be able to walk away with little bits of information and easy swaps," he said.

"There's a lot of single use plastic that's just floating around in the ocean that we've used for about 30 seconds."

Dougie and his McFly bandmates have just made a musical comeback after a three-year hiatus, playing a reunion gig at The O2 in London earlier this week.

Dougie's bandmate Tom Fletcher recently revealed that there is a lot more to come from McFly next year as they embark on a UK tour and prepare to record new music, saying: "McFly is a force and we're really excited about what's to come next year and looking at the next album."

Dougie Poynter's new book Plastic Sucks! You Can Make a Difference is out now. Seven Worlds, One Planet returns this Sunday (November 24) at 6.15pm on BBC One.
