It's almost 20 years since Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman aired its final outing - with one of the defining TV series of the 1990s ending on a cliffhanger. So cruel!

We'll never know what happened to Lois and Clark after that infant was dropped on their doorstep - but actor Dean Cain, who played the Man of Steel, has been up to a whole lot in the intervening years.

Cain turns 50 today (Sunday, July 31) - so here's a brief precis of his weird and wonderful career across the past two decades.

Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

Interesting fact: Cain was actually the second choice to play Clark Kent / Superman on the show that would go on to make him a star.

Unknown to producers, their original pick - Gerard Christopher - has previously top-lined the syndicated series Superboy from 1989 to 1991.

Not wanting to be linked to the previous series, they gave Christopher the boot when the truth was uncovered - and Cain was hired as his replacement.

The rest is history, with the 27-year-old actor - born Dean Tanaka - becoming Superman for an entire generation.

He's dipped his toe back into the world of Supes several times since, playing villainous Curtis Knox in a 2007 episode of Smallville and voicing Clark's father Jonathan Kent in this year's animated film DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year.

Most notably though, he's currently recurring on the hit series Supergirl as the Maid of Might's adopted dad Jeremiah Danvers.

Cain's appeared in three episodes to date, though the revelation in April's finale that his presumed-dead character is still alive opens up the possibility of more appearances in season two.

Deano's no fan, though, of the current screen incarnation of Superman - although he threw his support behind Henry Cavill, he noted that the current wave of DC movies have "no humour and no romance at all".

Cain at Christmas, fighting wrestlers and Netflix success

Dean's kept super-busy since his turn as the Man of Steel, with over 120 acting credits to his name after Lois & Clark.

Here is but a brief summary of his epic career - he's held regular roles in TV drama series The Division (2003-04), Clubhouse (2004-05), Las Vegas (2005-2006) and most recently VH1's cheerleading show Hit the Floor, on which he plays Coach Pete Davenport (2013-present).

Cain also poked fun at himself on Entourage in 2009 and on Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 in 2012, where he was cast as James Van Der Beek's arch-rival.

He's also a stalwart of The Dog Who Saved… franchise - a series of TV movies and straight-to-DVD films about a heroic ex-police dog. Seriously, this stuff has to be seen to be believed.

Cain's appeared in six of the movies - The Dog Who Saved… Christmas, Christmas Vacation, Halloween, the Holidays, Easter and Summer - alongside other '90s icons like Blossom's Joey Lawrence, and Saved by the Bell's Mario Lopez.

On top of that (!), he's become the unofficial face of Christmas in America, featuring in a string of festive TV films including (but not limited to) 2002's Christmas Rush, 2006's A Christmas Wedding, 2013's Defending Santa and 2015's Beverly Hills Christmas.

And who can forget his steamy nude scene with ex-Hollyoaks actress Joanna Taylor in 2004 disaster movie Post Impact?

In amongst this, he somehow found time to square off against WWE legend The Big Show in gritty video-on-demand thriller Vendetta - and most recently, he appeared as the lead character's ex-fiancé in hugely acclaimed Netflix series Lady Dynamite.

Now that's range.

Hunting Bigfoot, making The Choice and Taking The Jump

But it's not just his acting work that's kept Dean busy. From 2000-03, he hosted and co-produced the TBS series Ripley's Believe It or Not! and - in 2014 - he fronted 10 Million Dollar Bigfoot Bounty - a competitive reality series in which contestants embarked on a hunt for Sasquatch.

No, really - here's a trailer:

Less odd, though no less surprising, was his appearance on Fox's 2012 series The Choice - a short-lived dating spin on The Voice in which male contestants 'pulled their love handle' when they liked the sound of a lady guest.

Again, seriously, this happened.

And, of course, earlier this year, Dean signed up for the latest edition of Channel 4's The Jump, which pitted him against other celebrities in a series of perilous winter sports challenges.

"I'm not afraid of Sid Owen!!" Cain was heard to growl as he faced the ex-EastEnders star on the slopes - though he was eventually beaten to the top spot by retired England rugby player Ben Cohen.

He'll always be a winner in our eyes.
