Fire and ice: This resort-style home has all the elements covered
Pool, ice bath, sauna or fire pit? The choice is yours at this family home that's more like a resort. Photo: Supplied Photo: Supplied

This luxury Yamba home sits on 40 hectares and offers resort-style living

A sauna followed by an ice bath. A poolside party. A movie in the round room with velvet curtains drawn. A game of pool and drinks by the undercover fireplace. Cocktails crafted at the bar and enjoyed on the terrace. A campfire cook-up by the river.

Whatever your bliss is, Micalo delivers.

Owners Taliah and Sein Lowry bought the 40-hectare property and existing house with plans to do some updates and then enjoy it as a holiday getaway, but the property’s potential soon led to grander plans.

“Basically we bought the property thinking it would be a simple weekender with a little renovation,” says Taliah. “Things went from being simple to rebuilding the entire house with no expense spared on high-quality finishes.”

From Italian pewter door hardware to Ralph Lauren light fittings, Micalo is a design-lovers dream.

Recycled timbers add character both inside and out and marble and limestone feature on benchtops and floors. An integrated sound system brings music into every space, including to the poolside cabana where you can prepare a feast in the wood-fired oven.

The property is the ultimate entertainer and has played host to countless gatherings, from teenagers’ movie nights to big birthday celebrations.

“We built Micalo with the idea of bringing family and friends together to create memories where everyone has a hotel-style master bedroom with a private deck, en suite and with its own unique design and style,” Taliah says.

There are five king bedrooms in the main house and a sixth bedroom plus six built-in bunk beds in a separate, self-contained studio.

Fronting a channel of the Clarence River, the home comes with a professional two-hole golf course and putting green, a basketball half-court and multiple fire pits.

Taliah says it’s just as perfect as a retreat for a romantic weekend away as it is for a group of 20, or a celebration with 100 people.

Micalo could also be used as a health retreat or wedding and events venue, with access by car or helicopter from Ballina airport.

“It’s perfect for a family that wants a luxury escape with total privacy, but still wants access to amazing restaurants and gorgeous surf beaches and boating and hiking and fishing and all of that,” says Taliah. “You’re on 100 acres on the river in total luxury and you feel like you’re a million miles away from everything.”
