Andy Goldsworthy Collaborates With Mother Nature to Create Beautiful Art!
The first time I saw an Andy Goldsworthy exhibit was in 1996 when we traveled to Alaska. Half the family knew all about his artwork, but I was in the unfortunate half that didn't! Since then I have made up for lost time and enjoy his work immensely. Now, in 2013, the St. Louis Art Museum (SLAM -- a violent-image-laden acronym that seems somehow inappropriate for a great museum) has a wonderful new Goldsworthy exhibit of its own. It is a courtyard full of 25 densely arranged limestone arches (perfect for St. Louis) called "Stone Sea." The limestone came from a beautiful quarry about a mile from the house where I grew up. All of this is so exciting that I just had to buy some Goldsworthy books (and eBay's rates are so much cheaper than SLAM's). I bought this book and a German one, ... I bought this book and a German one, even though the only German phrase I can remember is the touristy "Wieviel kostet das?" (Vee-fill cost-it das? How much does it cost?) Fortunately my brother-in-law does speak German, and the pictures are gorgeous in any language! Anyway, it seems that 300 million years ago St. Louis and the rest of the Midwest were part of an ocean full of crustaceans who gave their all to form the limestone we have today. Looking down on the tops of the arches you can see wavelike images that illustrate "Stone Sea" perfectly. This work of art will be featured in future Goldsworthy books I am sure. Goldsworthy is a talented artist who works with Mother Nature to create wonderful pieces of art. He works with leaves, grass, straw, ice, and other less permanent forms of nature to make often-whimsical pieces that convey beauty and humor at the same time. Of necessity he has had to become a great photographer because of the ephemeral quality of much of his work. He also works with stonemasons to create more permanent artwork like SLAM's limestone arches. Somehow SLAM seems much more fitting now that "Stone Sea" is a part of it -- ancient waves slamming little seashells onto the shore creating beautiful limestone that was later quarried then hammered and chiseled into beautiful stone arches forming waves reminiscent of the past. This book is full of photos of Goldsworthy's short-lived and long-lived creative collaborations with Mother Nature. If you love Andy Goldsworthy, photography, nature, art, or just entertaining and great photos, you will love this book, all of his other books past and future, and any other pieces of his artwork that I hope the you will encounter.
