I am a fan of Willem de Kooning, a Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist. Interchange, sometimes called ‘Interchanged’, is a large-scale oil painting measuring 200 by 175 centimetres. It was sold in September 2015 for $312 million US. The sale represented a new record for the highest-ever price paid for a painting by any artist at the time. This world’s famous art piece is part of a private collection of Kenneth C. Griffin. Currently loaned to and displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago.

1. SALVATOR MUNDI by Leonardo Da Vinci

USD$450 million

Leonardo da Vinci‘s masterpiece Salvator Mundi achieves $450.312.500 a  world auction record for any work of art sold at auction.

The successful public unveiling of Christ as Salvator Mundi (“Savior of the World”) in the exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan at The National Gallery, London, in 2011, caused worldwide media excitement. Painted by one of history’s greatest and most renowned Italian artists, as well as one whose works are among the rarest—fewer than twenty paintings in existence are generally accepted as from the artist’s hand—it was the first discovery of a painting by Leonardo da Vinci since 1909, when the Benois Madonna, now in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, came to light.

Salvator Mundi’s inclusion in the exhibition came after more than six years of painstaking research and inquiry to document the painting’s authenticity, begun shortly after it was discovered – heavily veiled with overpaints, long mistaken for a copy – in a small, regional auction in the United States of America.

The painting’s new owners restored it and vetted its authenticity with the world’s leading authorities on the works and career of the Milanese master.

Salvator Mundi is a fascinating story of the greatest and most unexpected artistic rediscovery of the 21st century.
