🌵Fun facts: There are more than 1,000 described species of this fascinating arachnid— several dozen of which can be found right here in Arizona! This critter is know as a Camel spider, Sun spider, and wind scorpion, among other things, although it is neither spider nor scorpion. This strange critter is an arachnid called a solifugid (sul-few-jid). Despite their startling appearance, these arachnids are very timid and non-confrontational unless provoked. Even when provoked, after advertising a cute little threat display, they will still opt to flee from danger. Though they are capable of biting, it is very unlikely that they will do so as long as they have a place to run to.
In Latin, Solifugid translates to “Those that flee from the sun”. They are often seen running at impressive speeds (up to 10 mph!), and will often run towards you, not in defense but to share your shade! These critters are nocturnal ground dwellers with voracious appetites. They are opportunistic predators and eat other invertebrates and sometimes small mammals! They use their speed in combination with their oragami-like mouthparts to catch and chew their food…as they do not have venom to aid them in prey-capture. Contrary to popular belief, these arthropods do not attain the GIANT sizes that circulating photos have brought us to believe. The largest species grow to a length of just 6”!
