Sold individually, these authentic traditional Scottish Spurtles are handmade in Scotland by us, from native Scottish beech, cherry and elm wood felled and turned by ourselves, to the same traditional thistle design as the one we use to stir our porridge with :-) Ideal as a wood anniversary, Christmas, or wedding gift or just as an unique and useful utensil for your kitchen.
The spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the fifteenth century, that is used to stir porridge, soups, stews and broths.
The theory is that the rod-like shape means that porridge can be stirred without congealing and forming lumps unlike a spoon that would have a dragging effect during stirring, and the low surface area reduces the chances of porridge sticking to the instrument.
We make our spurtles from Scottish cherry which is lighter in colour and sometimes has reddish brown streaks or tinge to it, from mature Scottish beech which is a medium brown colour and has grain markings and beech flecks within it, and from Scottish elm which is a much darker and rich brown. We turn a traditional thistle type shape on the top, and we make them in two lengths so that they are appropriate length for your pan (many advertised elsewhere are rather long for comfortable use with a smaller pan). We finish our spurtles with a tartan ribbon bow, just because it looks nice. We also include an info slip with every spurtle, explaining the history and function of the Scottish spurtle (useful if you purchasing it as a gift for someone else).
On this item, several coats of food safe oils have been applied to finish the wood and capture the wonderful colours, which will provide protection for years to come. As with all wooden utensils, they should not be left soaking in water and they should be treated periodically to keep their finish. We recommend our own Anyfink Wood Balm which we have developed especially for Spurtles, Spoons, Boards and more:
