CHURCHGOERS came up with a “purl” of an idea to tell the Easter story.
The knitting group at the Church of St Thomas in Thurstonland have lovingly crafted Jesus and the twelve apostles to create the scene of the Last Supper.
The 8-inch figures – complete with knitted chalices of wine and plates of bread – have had a great reception from the congregation at the church in Marsh Hall Lane.
Pensioner Brenda Mellor told the Examiner it only took a matter of weeks for she and the rest of the group to create the religious figures.
The 77-year-old and the other nimble knitters Renee Rowden, Margaret Casson, Nanette Webster, Gillian Couldwell, Joan Callan and Jackie Sill all did their bit.
And they’ll have to get their needles clicking again soon as their next project is the royal wedding of William and Kate– complete with Queen and corgis.
Mrs Mellor, a great-grandmother of two, said: “One of the ladies saw the Royal wedding knitting pattern in a newspaper and she sent for it.
“We shall try and get it done before the wedding.
“We just knit – once we knitted a whole garden with flowers and monks and we put a scarecrow in the middle.
“We’re really proud of the Last Supper that we did; and at Christmas we knitted the Nativity.”
The group meet up every Wednesday afternoon and do most of their knitting for charity.
They have knitted clothes to send to the poor in Russia, inmates at New Hall prison and for premature babies at hospital special care units.
