An Instagram-worthy scene greets visitors to Yamba Lighthouse, a landmark that has guided watercraft for more than 100 years. The tall tower is one of the beachside town’s most popular attractions. You’ll find it easy to stay for a while to enjoy the awe-inspiring views. Buy local fish and chips or pack a picnic to relax on large swaths of grass surrounding the lighthouse.
Located on Yamba’s highest hill, the lighthouse was originally built in 1880, then replaced by the structure you see now in 1955. Stroll around the hill to spot views of the Clarence River to the west and the sparkling Pacific Ocean to the east. Get your camera ready for memorable sunrises and sunsets from this vantage point. From June to October, you might be lucky enough to see migrating whales.
Just steps south is Yamba Main Beach, framed by a picturesque ocean pool built into the rocks and one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in New South Wales. Splash in the calm waters of the pool or venture out into the surf. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards on the weekends and during school holidays. North of the lighthouse is Turners Beach, another great spot for a refreshing dip.
From the lighthouse, you’ll spot Angourie Point, a famous destination for surfing. If you’re experienced, take your board here for the right-hand point break. If you prefer to fish, keen anglers line the rocks of the estuary or take fishing charters out to where the fish are biting. Hikers have several coastal trails to choose from. Set out on the multiday Yuraygir Coastal Walk, which is signposted from Angourie to Red Rock.
In the town of Yamba itself, choose from atmospheric coffee shops and restaurants within easy walking distance of the beach and hotels. Stroll around the shops to find a gift to take home. The grounds around Yamba Lighthouse are open year-round, with free parking nearby. Most attractions in Yamba are within walking distance of each other. Drive to Yamba in about 3 hours from Brisbane.
