Sapium sebiferum, or the Chinese Tallow tree is a fast growing, deciduous or semi-deciduous tree with spreading crown and broadly ovate leaves with pointed tips.
It has terminal spikes of unremarkable, unisex flowers.
These are followed by small fruits that contain 3 seeds in a waxy substance that is used for making candles and soap.
The foliage turns to splendid hues of red and gold in autumn.
Slightly frost tender.
A good source of nectar for honeybees and an excellent shade tree, particularly useful for keeping concrete roads and pavements cooler in warm climates.
