Helen Mirren Proves Once and for All That Mermaid Waves Look Good at Any Age

If Dame Helen Mirren doesn’t give a damn about BS beauty “rules,” why should you?

Dame Helen Mirren, 77, appeared on the red carpet in Berlin on Monday, February 21, looking absolutely stunning. For the premiere of the biopic Golda, in which she plays Israel’s first female prime minister, Golda Meir, Mirren wore a fitted black dress and a new hairstyle: mermaid waves.

To enhance her glamorous red lip and bare décolletage, the actor wore her silver hair in long, cascading waves. Chest-skimming, super-smooth, and parted slightly to the side, Mirren’s new look was very much on trend. Everyone from Dua Lipa to Priyanka Chopra has been sporting ultralong waves recently.

But Mirren’s wearing her hair this long represents more of a statement than perhaps it should. There is an old-fashioned idea that once a woman reaches a certain age, she should cut her hair short. Some people think, incorrectly, that long, flowing hair is somehow the sole preserve of young women. It’s why we’re still fighting against the myth of the “mom haircut.”

Helen Mirren’s decision to show off her healthy, voluminous gray mane on the red carpet looks—and feels—refreshing. And it should mark an official end to any debate over whether or not certain hairstyles have an age limit. If Mirren’s looking this radiant is anything to go by, it’s high time we threw out any and all archaic beauty “rules” for good.
