Miss Piggy Through the Years: A Fashion Retrospective

Believe it or not, this fall, Miss Piggy, one of our greatest American pop culture icons, turns 40. In honor of her imminent birthday—and tomorrow's release of her latest blockbuster silver-screen hit, Muppets Most Wanted, let's take a look back at Miss Piggy's life in fashion. It's been quite something. Miss Piggy made her first televised appearance on the TV special Herb Alpert and the TJB on October 13, 1974. Here's a video of her television debut. Four years later, she was a full-fledged fashion star. Check out this stunning white dress coat look from 1978, with Raquel Welch on The Muppet Show. They heyday of Miss Piggy fashion, though, didn't happen until the '80s—that was really her decade, what with its over-the-top hairstyles, larger-than-life accessories, and more-is-more aesthetic. Here she is, decked out in early-'80s Pepto pink with Diana Brigg in The Great Muppet Caper. And with New York Mayor Ed Koch in 1983 wearing a very Princess Diana-inspired plaid pleated skirt and ruffled top ensemble. Note: the perm. The '90s saw Piggy go super glam—and fulfill her full-on old-Hollywood-inspired movie-star style destiny. In 1996, she appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in lipstick red with marabou

The '90s saw Piggy go super glam—and fulfill her full-on old-Hollywood-inspired movie-star style destiny. In 1996, she appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in lipstick red with marabou feathers.

And the early-2000s were also a wild time for Piggy—check out her bondage-inspired iridescent purple getup at a NASCAR event in 2002.

In 2005, at the height of Heatherette's club-gear fame, Miss Piggy made an appearance at the design duo's show at New York Fashion Week. I'm loving the retro-inspired aerobics-ish look—it's soooo Heatherette.

And in 2008, Miss Piggy pulled this number out of her closet—a patent pink, leopard-trimmed coat. It's like she's fully embracing her icon status and going pig-wild!

One of the rare times we've ever seen Miss Piggy wearing head-to-toe black was in 2010, with Meryl Streep at the Women Making Their Mark event in New York City.

And here's Miss Piggy more recently, at the premiere of Muppets Most Wanted earlier this month.

What I want to know is: Which Miss Piggy look is your favorite?
