James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.

Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.

Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.

Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.

Though the individual strips can be fun, I've always thought the Garfield strip was better when it went into long sequences; a personal favorite is the Tubby Tabby's bout of amnesia. So, after reading the same old fat cat stories again and again, it's fun to have something new...and in a bit of a different format. If you're one of those people like Maddox who can't stand Jim Davis' creation, you probably won't enjoy this...but, for longtime fans like me, this is worth checking out.

The coloring has been seriously overhauled since the original newspaper comics of Garfield I used to read as a kid. I gave it a 5 star rating for only one reason...it's Garfield! Enough said!

The Garfield collections (i.e. Vol 1, etc.) are great in book form, but don't waste your money on the Kindle version -- the format, as it displays on the Kindle monitor, makes it all but impossible to see and read the panes in sequence. I'd love to get my money back, but instead, I just won't make this horrible mistake again.

I really like the old comics. I used to love reading them. These aren't bad either, they just aren't as good as the old ones. But, Garfield is Garfield. He is as grumpy and hungry as ever haha.

I will read the second volume maybe it's just a first volume thing and the others are better.

Anything with Garfield is good

As one who has read the Garfield comic strips since Jim Davis introduced us to the fat cat in 1978, I had to take a look at this collection of stories featuring the chubby feline. I was not disappointed. The best one was when Jon was trying to count the jelly beans in a jar to win $500, but all of them are funny and entertaining.

Reflections and lessons learned:
“I hope you appreciate that I do all my own stunts in this comic book! And by the way, I really do them - this isn’t cgi!”

Familiar characters, familiar cat capers, familiar lasagna and pizza eating - does any comic book break the fourth wall from the main harrumphing character as well as this? And I still love Nermal… looking forward to revisiting and reading more from this series

This book was ok. It wasn’t as good as the original Garfield comic strips but it wasn’t as horrible as some of the other Garfield comics I’ve read. This book was a bunch of stories told in comics. Some of the stories were interesting and some were kind of pointless. They weren’t nearly as funny as the original Garfield comic strips. So overall the book was ok but it wasn’t great.

Jim Davis! You old so-and-so! I read this book in under an hour. Thought-provoking, witty, and not to mention plain old smart! Garfield and his mischievous adventures never fail to disappoint this reader! My one critique, I wanted more!

Não tem o que dizer, é um bom quadrinho, tem momentos bem engraçados. Faz entender o porquê dele ser o gato laranja mais famoso do mundo.

Some of the stories were funnier than others, but it's Garfield. What's not to love?

At the end was a collection showing the first appearances of each Garfield, Odie, and Nermal. Also, I learned in this comic book that Nermal is a male cat and belongs to Jon's parents. I thought Nermal was a girl and that she belonged to a neighbor. Now I know!

Fun to read once but maybe not something I'd buy to reread.

Blast from the past. I enjoyed reading Garfield in color and in graphic novel format. Same old Garfield who insults his owner and fellow pets and is always hungry. I have fond memories of reading Garfield in the newspaper and in the rectangular books of comic strip compilations. I can definitely see Garfield as an inspiration for other comic strips. I recommend this book for Garfield fans and for those who like to see a pet act as the boss.

Great Volume 1 of Garfield

Yeah!
Just finished to read this Kindle edition as I started my first trails of Kindle Unlimited this month, June. 2020.
It is a great volume to read about one of my favourite cartoon characters, Garfield.
I suggest you must read this comic if you are interested in this fat cat.
Enjoy!!!

I’m giving this 5 stars for the joy it brings me to see Garfield, Odie and Nermal in sharp, glorious color, and the great memories as I’m reminded of my childhood obsessed with Garfield. This is geared more towards children but it was nice taking a stroll down memory lane. Nermal is my favorite! 🐈
