Ducks will be ducks in this silly story that encourages little ones to march to their own beat and be true to themselves. Readers will love to giggle and count along as our little duck friend encounters a growing number of silly animals in this hilarious read.
A duck goes out for a walk and meets a variety of animals - one elephant, two giraffes, three horses, fours pigs, five monkeys (that's right, those old jumping on the bed monkeys), six flamingos, seven grasshoppers, eight spiders, nine bluebirds, ten ducks. Each of the animals is engaged in an activity, and when the duck quacks, they ignore him. After all, they don't speak duck so they don't understand him. And yes, this is a counting book. Kids can spend time counting the different the different animals duck meets, and talking about why they are engaged in the activity they are doing. They will also enjoy the repeated refrain as the duck continues his walk - "so the duck just kept waddling." It has a charming happy ending for the duck and takes they the book beyond the number 10. I found myself pleasantly surprised reading Quack! for the first time with some young readers, who asked to read it over and over. The illustrations are simply but sweet and really more the duck along nicely.
This is a good book for children learning how to count. And I feel the animals make it more fun for the children. I think young boys and girls will both like this book. I liked how the duck was trying to tell the other animals something but it only came out as Quack!; so the other animals didn't understand him.
In humorous fashion, this counting book follows a yellow duck as he goes for a waddle and passes various other animals hanging out in their natural habitat. Each time he passes by another group of animals, the number increasing as he waddles by, he always utters a "Quack!" which elicits no response since the animals don't speak his language. I was getting rather worried about him and if he'd ever get a quack back after the nine bluebirds didn't respond, but as the ending shows, there is someone or several someones out there who can understand him--ten other ducks, which when he joins them, quack and count their numbers at eleven. Yes, this is silly fun, but the colors of the illustrations and the persistent duck who just keeps motoring along, somewhat like the Ever Ready Bunny from years of yore keep young readers engaged and counting, from one all the way up to eleven.
The updated version of this board book consists of a large book with the story described above but with the addition of a small flip book at the bottom of the larger one that gives youngsters a chance to practice their counting skills, from one to ten, while looking at various animals, including pigs and spiders.
Quack – Joe Fitzpatrick -- This is my nephew’s favorite book, and it lives in the car so he can read it on the way to day care. Hope you think it’s cute too! Happy Reading!
