Elisabeth "Liza" Beresford MBE was a British author of children's books, best known for creating The Wombles. Born into a family with many literary connections, she worked as a journalist but struggled for success until she created the Wombles in the 1960s. The strong theme of recycling was particularly notable, and the Wombles became very popular with children across the world. While Beresford produced many other literary works, the Wombles remained her most well known creation.
Who of a certain age does not remember the Wombles I wonder? Well here is Orinoco with some of his fellow Wombles in an adventure involving tidying Wimbledon Common.
While tidying the Common he discovered an old box that had a magician's cape, hat and wand. He dressed up, shouted 'Abracadabra! Please get rid of all this rubbish.' And magically it all ended up in his tidy bag without him having to do anything.
He thought this was great and told his fellow Wombles that he was Orinoco the Magnificent and that nobody could tidy up as quickly as he did. Or so he thought. But what he didn't reckon with was Stepney Womble from the Thames Burrow who was coming over to Wimbledon to show them how to tidy up quickly, and he was just the person to do that because he was nicknamed 'Whizz Womble'.
This causes great rivalry and attempts to show who was best - Orinoco was certainly best at making Madame Cholet Womble's cakes disappear! So the tidying up began in earnest and some of the other Wombles joined in, with Alderney and Shansi watching them in action from the Womcopter!
When it was all over they had a friendly supper together and Orinoco asked, 'Now then, who wants to see my magic trick? It's called making your supper disappear. VROOM, VROOM!'
It is very nicely illustrated and if nothing else it brings back memories of the Mike Batt music that accompanied the Wombles ... 'The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we ...'!
