Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games a winner for hockey

Published Tue 12 Apr 2022

Hockey in Australia is ready to reap the momentous benefits of another home Commonwealth Games following the announcement that Victoria will host the 2026 edition of the showpiece event.

Uniquely, Victoria’s securing of the 2026 Commonwealth Games will see most sports contested in regional areas of the state outside of metropolitan Melbourne.

Hockey was one of 16 sports confirmed for the 2026 Commonwealth Games as part of today’s announcement in what is a major fillip for the game in Australia.

“This is a huge win for hockey in this country and adds to the green and gold runway for sport over the next decade with the summit of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032,” said Hockey Australia CEO David Pryles.

“Hockey is extremely popular in regional areas and a host of Australia’s finest players have come from these smaller towns and cities.”

“To have our flagship world class national hockey teams, the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos, playing in regional Victoria will inspire kids and those in these communities to give hockey a go and discover the many physical and mental benefits sport can have.”

“This announcement creates a broader dialogue and long term vision for sport in Australia.

“With another significant event now on the horizon and on their own doorstep for the next generation to aim for, as a National Sporting Organisation we are optimistic this will see sport receive increased funding.

“We are determined to play a role in this vision of future success and highlighting the importance of sport in Australian society.”

Hockey Victoria CEO Andrew Skillern added: “Hosting the Commonwealth Games in Regional Victoria will be a real boost to the sport in Victoria.”

“It will provide a much needed profile and participation lift in some of our major regional centres, which is really positive for the sport.”

Australia has a proud and successful Commonwealth Games history, which the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos have played a significant role in.

The Kookaburras have won every gold medal on offer since hockey was first introduced to the Commonwealth Games in 1998, while the Hockeyroos have medalled in every edition including four gold.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in March 2026.
